When choosing a theme for your WordPress blog get one that is labeled as
an SEO theme. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimized.
An SEO theme is one that has SEO features built in to it that, in the past (and
even now), were obtained through plugins. Even if your theme has SEO
features built in you’ll still need to add some plugins to get maximum SEO.

A theme description may say
something like, “straight out of the box, comes
ready to embrace search engines.” That’s only true to a certain extent. You’ll
still need to do more work after you’ve installed the theme in your WordPress
in order to get it playing nicely with Google (and other search engines).

While WordPress ‘out of the box’ has some SEO built in, and while Google
does love WordPress, it’s the theme you use in your WordPress that actually
interfaces with search engines … not WordPress itself. You need an SEO
theme.

A good SEO theme will put your keywords ahead of other words in the page
title bar that’s at the top of your browser when you have a page open. Of
course, you have to actually use your keywords. Look at that bar right now and

You also need to use your keywords as headings within your pages. A
non-SEO theme will waste SEO juice on those unimportant words like
‘categories’ and ‘archives’. A good SEO theme will make your keywords
appear in headings properly and won’t let this happen.
Finally, for this article but not its subject, you must watch for hidden
links. A good SEO theme will only have a link to its
author and his website. If you got the theme for free you should leave the link
there out of courtesy. However, you may find some bad links that will destroy
your chances of getting ranked well.

Those bad links go to terrible sites such as illegal pharmacy, gambling, and
porn sites. You don’t want to end up linking to these and dirty your reputation or
have Google kick you out. These are good reasons for you to go through all
the WordPress themes you intend to use to get rid of the links you don’t know
anything about.
