Finding and Selecting Wordpress Plugins
Searching the web for the best Wordpress plugins for your Wordpress blog
can be a little daunting at times, and when you find one that you think you may
need you have to wonder if it’s going to work in your blog. Sometimes your
theme or the version of your Wordpress may not permit its use on your blog.
That doesn’t happen often, but it has on a rare occasion on some of my blogs.
Wordpress may warn you if you attempt to install an incompatible plugin, but it
doesn’t and you discover a problem after installation, deactivate it if it got that
far. Then remove it and visit the problem area in your blog to insure that it’s
OK again. It’s unlikely that the bad plugin did any damage beyond, perhaps,
shaking you up a little.
When you hear of a plugin you think might advance your blog go to the
author’s site and see what has been said about which Wordpress versions
the plugin works in and about the plugin’s current status.
Most likely you’ll find yourself on a blog. Scroll down and read the comments.
See if most of the comments about the plugin are favorable or people are
having problems. Look for the author’s responses to see if you may be on
your own to solve problems or doe he or she help.
If I saw that there were problems I’d do without it until all the problems were
resolved.
So, where do you get plugins for your blog?
Try http://wp-plugins.net. It has the largest list of plugins of any site I’ve seen on
the internet. I’m told that they have over 2500 plugins in this database and are
still counting. There are even plugins to manage plugins.
I’ll be reviewing plugins and tools in future posts quite often. I welcome your
suggestions and requests for reviews.
